The Heavyweight Champion of Northfield

Posted May 15, 2008

Gordon Marino is sort of the Norman Mailer of St. Olaf College. A former boxer and boxing coach at the Virginia Military Institute, he's since channeled much of his existential aggression into the serious study of Freud and Kierkegaard (he's the curator of the Howard and Edna Hong Kierkegaard Library). But, like Mailer always was, Marino is fascinated by combat--and he's found a way to apply a little philosophical bob-and-weave to pugilists relevant beyond academe. He's frequently squared off against President Bush on HuffPost, and he's interviewed Mike Tyson for the New York Times Magazine. In his most recent story for The Wall Street Journal he rumbles with David Mamet, whose new jiu-jitsu movie Red Belt comes out this weekend.

Good post, Marsh.

As far as boxing metaphors go, I believe I went the distance.

Fun fact: At lunch today, Marino said Mamet is more intimidating than Tyson. I should've asked, "What about Tyson in his prime?"

This really is a jewel in the rough --

Oh, wait. Different simile.

TKO!

Seriously. Too bad Gem of the Ocean was actually good. Otherwise somebody could've said, "This Gem has a glass jaw."

One other interesting note on Dr. Marino: he's badass enough to rock a beret.

There's a jiu-jitsu movie coming out? And Mamet wrote the script?

This I have to see.

And it stars Chiwetel Ejiofor. Redbelt.

read that on the plane in the WSJ Tueseday. wondered WTF that Marino cat was that he got a Mamet interview in WSJ. Just for the record, I could kick both of their asses. Marsh's too.

These days, it's rare to find a man able to rock the beret.

What'd he order for lunch?

We had Indian food at Chapati in Northfield. It was a buffet. He DID NOT have a mango lassi.
»» Submitted by stevemarsh at 5:29 PM on May 15

you prolly both had tea... still kicking both yer asses. eat all the chicken biryani you want.

He DID NOT have a mango lassi.
That would have pretty much made the whole experience null and void.

Who wants to go and see Redbelt this weekend?
»» Submitted by »»» teucer at 10:23 AM on May 16

Shit, if I have time I'll go.

By the way, I own that rifle now.
»» Submitted by »»» msparber at 10:26 AM on May 16

Awesome... Which one did you buy?

There was a story about Mamet in the WSJ this week. He's my favorite filmmaker.

He took a backhanded swipe at boxing in the interview. He said next to MMA, watching boxing "was like watching paint dry."

Hey, Movie Boy, how about three rounds? Guarantee you won't be bored.

The levermatic. Here's a picture of me with it:

Interesting, but MMA fights can be boring too, sometimes. People get locked up in the guard passes or defending their backs.

It's even worse when it's just plain jiu-jitsu. There are all sorts of stalling tactics, each one more boring to watch than the last.

I hope that doesn't count as "brandishing"?

The state's hunting community appreciates picture like that.

WTF, Rat? "There was a story on Mamet in the WSJ this week."

I'm going to start doing that halfway down other threads.

"Hey, I heard DeRusha won some kind of an award."

I was too caught up in wanting to kick Mamet's ass to notice. Sorry.
»» Submitted by The Rat at 11:04 AM on May 16

I hear you. I prefer watching boxing over mixed martial arts too.

Boxing is the sweet science.

What's your favorite boxing book? I like Cut Time by Carlo Rotella (Marino recommended that one, actually). I like Mailer's The Fight and most of the articles he wrote on the subject too.

That was me. And the walrus was Paul.

A Beautiful Sickness: Reflections on the Sweet Science by Thomas Hauser.

I actually think boxing writers generally rank among the best sportwriters I have ever read, but that may be because I hate almost all other sports.

Went to the late showing of Redbelt at the Lagoon last night. Most Mamet movies are baffling and a bit hard to follow. This one was the same. Pretty lush and well-filmed though. I'm still trying to think through the ending.
