Local Dating

Hi all, What local online dating sites are there for singles in MN? Are there sites that are better than others in your opinion and if so, why?

Thanks for any links/referrals.

Many years ago I used Match.com
It went okay. I met my future wedding photographer on it. I met my husband by other means, though.

Based on the picture I've seen and your educational/work background, I'm seriously surprised you have had a problem finding a date!

Good luck!
»» Submitted by I can't believe you can't find a date! at 12:30 PM on May 14

They all suck at varying degrees, but I've had the most luck with the City Pages online dating...cuz you can use it for free.
»» Submitted by »»» aliecat at 12:31 PM on May 14

I also have a friend who uses Craigslist with some luck. He is in a LTR now.
»» Submitted by »»» kc! at 12:34 PM on May 14

I like Chemistry.com.

I wouldn't recommend MNSpeak though.
»» Submitted by »»» Bixby at 12:37 PM on May 14

You'd be surprised at the number of girls I have kissed as a result of MnSpeak.

And boys, I suppose. That spin the bottle game went wildly awry.

You didn't complain at the time, Bunny.

Whatever, Max. I'm still not bringing MNSpeak home to meet Mother Bixby.
»» Submitted by »»» Bixby at 12:39 PM on May 14

I suppose it all depends on what you mean by "date."

You didn't complain at the time, Bunny.

That's a lot of stache on stache lovin.

I used Match.com and met my husband. Several friends had luck with it too. I have had a couple of guy friends who had good luck with Craiglist as well. More casual meet ups though.

Now, I referred cmg to you guys, so give her some straight answers!!

I'm still hoping for a boyfriend fairy to drop one off at my house (because I hate first dates and small talk).

I'm really hoping that my mom will take me up on that whole "arrange my marriage" offer. Most people's parents would jump at that chance. Except Mother Bixby who said, "No, you can find your own husband. You're an adult!" I am a lazy adult, dammit!

»» Submitted by »»» nateek at 1:07 PM on May 14

Don't answer, Wayne, it's a trap! If you say anything, it'll be all over the Internet, and she'll be like "Wayne, did you mention on someone's blog that we are dating?" and there is never, ever a good answer to that question.

In fact, there is never a good answer to any question that has the word "blog" in it.

Godwilling I will never have to use a dating site, but I am fascinated by the whole thing. Here I am, a pretty digital guy. Not yet 40. On again, off again Twitter guy, social networks, communities, etc. and yet I'll probably never use the grand daddy of online networks -- a dating site.

If I was dating, I'd use this site and then proceed with pride to be the creepy old guy. (Partially NSFW.)

To reiterate kurtis, the poster of this topic isn't asking for herself, rather for the purpose of research. She emailed me this morning as well, and I told her that I wasn't aware of any dating sites that were exclusively local, which is what she's looking for.

So, are there any MSP-only dating sites anyone knows of?

Yeah Christine. It's too bad all your experience is working for the government or I could have had a real job to offer you.
»» Submitted by mazasa at 1:47 PM on May 14

My guess is that it's difficult to have a local-only dating website, so one would just set up identical websites across the country. Dating/personals sites kind of run themselves, don't they? There's probably no desire to limit potential to just one market.
»» Submitted by »»» alexis at 1:48 PM on May 14

Such as the military, which is apparenlty not a government job.

Truly it is written; these are the end of days.

Then the Beast said unto me "come and see" and I saw Wayno, and he was frolicking hand-in-hand through a field with a girl. Then the angel did sound a cruel and clear note through the Last Trump and the stars began to fall.

»» Submitted by »»» msparber at 1:53 PM on May 14

People still say "kegger" or have "keggers"? Not mocking, I just thought it was only a term my older bros used. They still think Rush and Jethro Tull are the Greatest. Bands. Ever.

I think there used to be local online dating sites, but with the nationals kinda suckin' everyone up, I think it's hard to compete.

I had good, bad and "wtf?" luck with match.com - until the last dude dumped me to go back to his wife and three kids in the suburbs.
Ouch and Ugh!

The lakes have been fairly successful for me this year - nothing long term, but fun. Well, except for the bacon t-shirt dude, well, he did make me laugh... at him. He was just sad, poor dude.

But I think it really depends on what and who you're looking for as to what site will be the best fit.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I haven't need to try it in several years, but The Onion has good personals that for me seemed to contain many like-minded people. It looks like the City Pages but I'm not sure if it's just the same engine or in fact the same site.

The people on match.com just seemed a bit too...vanilla...for my tastes. Lots of girls out of school and have their first job and a townhome in Blaine but there's one thing that's still missing to patch that enormous hole in their lives. They enjoy going out or staying in, walks around the lakes, and spending time with friends and family. It would be so nice for them to finally find someone to share this all with. You know, boring people.
