Baconalia 2008 - Baconopsis & headcount.

Posted March 28, 2008

Can we post here and confirm final headcounts for the Triplerock at 2pm tomorrow, and Manny's at 9pm, so I can ensure the right sized tables? I was unable to get a booking with the TripleRock (they don't check their voicemail or answer their phone), so can someone confirm they're still open? Make sure you have my phone number (see below, and I'm Oliver, for those who don't know me), and if you can't find me tomorrow, give me a call. (more inside)

Here's info on how we will find each other...

I will be at the TripleRock at 2pm and Manny's at 9pm, with my cellphone (612 963 9111). I will endeavor to bring a suitable MNspeak-related token, and Manny's has a booking under my name. I have made no specific plans for what happens between the TripleRock and Manny's - if the lunch crowd have to skip out after lunch, I'll probably end up hanging out down at the Central Library, because that's just how I roll.

But it might be good if we were to develop a pre-Manny's meet-up plan. Any suggestions for a nice drinking hole near the restaurant that we can meet at from, say, around 7.30pm?

I'm in for the evening part. See you then!

I'm going to try to make the 2 p.m. lunch. You will feel a sense of palpable evil and the air will become icy before just I enter the room.

Damn, I just hate that..

»» Submitted by »»» justpbob at 12:01 PM on March 28

I will be at one or both.
»» Submitted by »»» msparber at 12:04 PM on March 28

Since I know both Oliver and Bob on sight (how sad is that?), I'll have no trouble locating y'all at 2. I will have to skip out on the evening affair. Too much bacon? Nah! It must be something else.
»» Submitted by »»» DouglasG at 12:06 PM on March 28

Can't. Gotta work.
»» Submitted by kevin at 12:09 PM on March 28

In for sure at Manny's. Will try to make lunch at TripleRock, but will be late after 2:30 or so.
»» Submitted by »»» mb21 at 12:09 PM on March 28

Oliver, Triple Rock is still open. They're just too punk rock to ever answer their phone.

I'm a Baconalia Bailer as an invite to get spring turns in on the slopes came up this week, and, well, no offense to anyone, but travel/skiing will always win.

But, I will truly try to make it to the next Baconalia.

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Jane!

I'm in, if I can find the group.

I'll be baconing in the evening.

Here's a link to my post on Chowhound. Seems avid local foodie David Foureyes is out, but he has some strong recommendations in & around NE.

I'm getting closer to being in for the evening portion of the program. But my wife is now calling me Senor Heartburn.

someone is having wiki-fun with bacon.
»» Submitted by grote at 1:13 PM on March 28

My life's motto - "Everything's better with bacon!"

How could I not attend this event? I *should* be at both...
»» Submitted by »»» Bubbles at 1:18 PM on March 28

I was just informed that Figlio has some sort of crazy Bacon Burger with 2 large slabs of bacon.

I also forgot about this amazing tapa @ solera. Pork belly with grilled boudin noir (blood sausage) on a stick. that white slab in the middle is the "bacon".

apparently, before THE AX, UofMN and WIS annually swapped the SLAB OF BACON between their football teams.

»» Submitted by grote at 1:37 PM on March 28

Bacon is healthier than cheap processed chicken entrees, it would seem.
»» Submitted by »»» justpbob at 1:39 PM on March 28

I will try to make the afternoon one, but count me bacon for the evening. I might even make pre-bacon drinks. I think the Lyon's pub is near Manny's.
»» Submitted by »»» aliecat at 1:50 PM on March 28

god dammit, you plan bacon night when i'm predisposed, bastards.
»» Submitted by »»» baker at 1:55 PM on March 28

the Lyon's Pub is next to Murrays, not Manny's.
»» Submitted by grote at 1:56 PM on March 28

The slab of bacon is nice, but it is no Floyd of Rosedale.

»» Submitted by »»» DouglasG at 1:56 PM on March 28

Did somebody say Floyd?

Show's how often I get into DT, doesn't it Grote?
»» Submitted by »»» aliecat at 2:19 PM on March 28

So, pre-Manny's; do we want to go to The Local or Brits? I feel like I should stay impartial in this decision.

»» Submitted by »»» teucer at 2:24 PM on March 28

Yes you should. We know how you feel about the Irish.

I think we should go to Brit's as it would be nice to see teucer amongst his own kind...kind of like a return to the wild.
»» Submitted by »»» aliecat at 2:45 PM on March 28

also...looking @ the menu @ the Local, I do not see Scotch Eggs. only @ brit's, I guess.

On the bacon rumor front, I just threw out the Baconalia concept to the gals in the office and got some good suggestions:

Meet up @ Keys in the Foshay...plenty of bacon (BLT, sides, etc.) and open til 10pm.

And in the whopper of whoppers...Red Stag allegedly has bacon ice cream on the menu!
»» Submitted by grote at 2:46 PM on March 28

I think to accurately see what it's like to be an Englishman in London just now, we would have to sit down with Oliver for some Indian food.
»» Submitted by »»» msparber at 2:49 PM on March 28

I called Red Stag. Bacon Ice Cream is for real.
»» Submitted by grote at 2:51 PM on March 28

You're right, Max. Seeing Teucer at Brits is kind of like viewing the polar bears at the Como Zoo.
»» Submitted by »»» aliecat at 2:52 PM on March 28

Alie - does that mean we can throw things at him and taunt him?

I'd be fine with either Brits or the Local to start.

It is because this thread can tell that you're passionate about bacon!
»» Submitted by »»» DouglasG at 3:25 PM on March 28

I saw Ms. Bubbles at Brit's last night for her birthday celebration. I'm getting the sense that The Local is the preferred choice. I think I will make a unilateral decision that The Local is where we shall meet pre-Manny's, as it's getting on in the day and people will be heading home soon.

Check this post tomorrow - if there are any other updates, I'll let you know. If The Local is so crowded as to be unbearable, or you can't find the MNspeakers, call my cell (so don't forget to write down the number).
»» Submitted by »»» teucer at 3:48 PM on March 28

estimated gathering time for the local?
»» Submitted by grote at 3:51 PM on March 28

I think I suggested 7.30 pm. But we can go earlier. It may be that people from the lunch crowd will stick around and we'll just bar hop until local-time.
»» Submitted by »»» teucer at 3:56 PM on March 28

I'm definately in for dinner. I vote for pre drinks at the Local. As of this afternoon, the Brits staff hates my guts. (no comment)

Dara Moskowitz on Manny's (STEAKHOUSE) Bacon Appetizer:

We got the apple-smoked bacon appetizer ($11.95) because a friend of mine raves about it. It was two enormous slabs of mind-obliteratingly rich, smoky baconI mean, really, this bacon was mind-altering, you take a bite of the fatty wealth of it and your brain stops functioning entirely; it's the rock cocaine of food, and exactly as good and bad as that sounds. That said, my date and I together couldn't finish even a quarter of the mammoth order, so, if I were you, I wouldn't get it unless you've got a table of at least four to share it with.

Umm, well being 24 makes me feel a lot younger than late twenties. Actually, I feel more like 20 as far as real age goes.

I think graduate school has stunted and ate away at my social skills and maturity growth.

That explains why I have to hide behind a computer monitor and keyboard and am afraid to talk to real people, LOL

Ok, I think I am having a mid-twenties crises right now.
