Road to the Frozen Four

Posted March 23, 2008

Today the NCAA announced the teams that will be competing for the NCAA Hockey Championships. Two teams from Minnesota are in - The Gophers of Minnesota and the Huskies of St. Cloud State. You can also download a printable bracket. Also, it looks like some Mankato State (err Minnesota State at Mankato) fans are none-too-happy about being left out.

Let's not forget that Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs won the NCAA Women's Hockey Championship (over Wisconsin) at the DECC in Duluth this weekend before a crowd of more than 4,000.

I wonder if the Minnesota Duluth Lady Bulldogs ever get called their name changed by opposing fans?

by the way...that printable bracket is from last year. a year in which the greatest school on earth happened to win.

I would be upset too if I were the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles. What? Oh, Mavericks. They were a much better team than Wisconsin. Better record, better ranking, better...

However, I think the Badger selection is all about $$$. The tourney would have a much better attendance in Madison if the Badgers were in it.

One could make the case for Wisconsin being in the tournament, although it's flimsy, but how on earth do they justify giving them a home game? How am I supposed to take the NCAA seriously when it gives a bubble team a first round home game? The fix is in, what a corrupt outfit the NCAA is. The next time I see that big giant obnoxious blue circle at center court I'm going to puke all over it.

They get a home game because any team that is hosting a regional who makes it into the tourney gets to play at home. That's been a long-standing rule, and it was a given. If they picked Wisconsin for the tourney, they would play at home.

The biggest problem the NCAA Hockey Tournament has is attendance. It won't be a problem in Madison, and it probably won't be a problem in Denver, but the regionals out east will likely be sparsely attended even with BC in Wooster.

The fact of the matter is the criteria that the NCAA set before the season even starte dictated that that Wisconsin get in, and that Wisconsin plays at home int he first round. Argue that the criteria is bad, not that they changed the rules to screw MSU-Mankato.

"A year in which the greatest school on earth happened to win."

I thought Michigan State won last year.

The criteria is bad, it's total bullshit to give any team a home game by default and reeks of a tournament designed to make money rather than crown a national champion. This year it's just more blatantly obvious because the home team squeaked in with a losing record.

The problem is that MSU-Mankato should have been in before Wisconsin (and arguably before the Gophs.) However, record, ranking, etc were not considered in the selection process. The Gophers can play lousy all year long, get hot at the end and make the big dance. The Badgers can play mediocre all year and make it because it is a large school playing at home. However, because Mankato is a smaller school and not a draw, so they don't get an invite. That is crap!

This would be a valid argument, except for the fact that neither of these are the reason Wisconsin is in the tournament and MSU-Mankato is not.

It is exactly why Mankato is not in and Wisconsin is in. There will never be a regional game in Mankato. It is too small. Thus, they will never have what amounts to an automatic bid by Wisconsin. It is all about size of the school.

Douglas, have you done any reading about how the teams were picked? Do you understand that Wisconsin got into the tournament because they won more comparisons against other 'Teams Under Consideration' than MSU-M did? If you really think Wisconsin got in because they're a bigger school than obviously you haven't.

And if hosting regionals were decided by the size of the school, how is it that Holy Cross and RPI are hosting regionals this year (In Worcester and Albany respectively)? I guess your argument could be that the arena in Mankato isn't large enough to host the tourney but I'm sure MSU-M could rent the X to host if they really wanted to do it.

Wisoncin had a better Pairwise ranking. Nvm that Mankato won the season series, had a better overall record and make a much better showing in their firstround WCHA playoff loss than Wisconsin did.

Could be worse, could be BCS.

Listen, there are plenty of legitimate arguments form putting MSU in instead of Wisconsin, but the fact remains that the NCAA has a selection process that is so close to perfectly transparent that an outside entity (US College Hockey Online) can create a ranking system (the Pairwise) that has never been wrong in predicting will be in the tournament. And using those criteria, Wisconsin comes out ahead.

So I'm supposed to believe that of two bubble teams, it's total coincidence that the one that got selected just so happens to have up to two home games?

To quote George Strait, I've got ocean-front property in Arizona, and if you buy that I'll throw the Golden Gate in free.
