"Statewide collab looks to bring affordable housing to Phillips"

I'm not even sure what to say about this headline... the irony has rendered me temporarily speechless.

I dunno last I checked, Phillips had some of the most "affordable" housing in town.

WTF, srsly.

The biomass facility seems like a good idea, but with no restrictions on what they can burn, it could very easily be a nasty polluter. Plasma gasification is the way to go. Also seems that the people behind the project are concentrating more on greenwashing than actually making anything worthwhile.

The biomass burner fight will really heat up here in Senate District 61 soon. There is supposed to be a 61B House candidate forum soon, and the convention in this district is next Saturday, March 29th (registration begins at 9:30 AM)

In theory, burning biomass, especially an easy growing perennial crop with minimum input requirements on enough acreage might make more sense than subsidies for corn and corn ethanol, soy biodiesel, etc. but the long term risk is the depletion of soils, and screwing up forest ecology for innumerable little critters.

Lance Sorensen from the MN DNR does a great presentation on wood biomass burners. The MN State Legislature has tried to create one of these biomass-for-electricity on an industrial scale in NE Minnesota and had to change their definitions to meet their goals in terms of closed-loop or carbon neutrality.

I am for small trials of biomass burning generators for distributed power generation close to degraded forests - village scale. I am reserving some judgment on this thing, but I am prepared to work hard to defend Rep. Karen Clark from challengers who are motivated by support of this project.

You want to make electricity in Phillips? I would push for energy conservation first, and if roofs being replaced to accommodate appropriate insulation, HVAC systems to remedy sick building syndrome, etc. put photovoltaic shingles up and see if that adds up on a few thousand houses.

Generic biomass burning, without specifying the fuel source make me think of that Kurt Vonnegut world where they burned great big bonfires of time.

Or that they are going to make fuel for your cars and listrik for your lightbulbs by converting the kittehs, then maybe puppies and the idle poor.

yeah, 'affordable' housing gets built in phillips because there are no rich yuppie neighbours to throw a fit.

even though neighbourhoods with rich yuppie neighbours are the best ones to support (reasonable amounts of) affordable housing. all this is doing is concentrating poverty, which obviously is the best solution (gag).
