Policeman's opinion: Ellison a terrorist

Posted March 1, 2007

The exact comments that Kroll made while participating in the class were not spelled out by Dolan or Rybak. But two officers present at Tuesday's ethics training class, who spoke on condition that they not be named, said Kroll made a remark about "being at war with Islamic terrorists" and that "one was elected to Congress." When an officer angered by the comment asked if he was calling Ellison a terrorist, Kroll said, "He's Islamic and we are at war with the Islamic," the two officers said.

Just a couple of suggestions of how antagonism could have arisen between cops and Ellison: he was a criminal defense lawyer, and he did introduce a bill in the legislature that would have decriminalized making false reports of brutality against a cop.

So he's cooked in your opinion based on hearsay evidence from unnamed sources?

I think you have a dubious notion of what hearsay is. This was a first hand account of these two officers having heard him actually say it. Just because they declined to give their names does not make it hearsay.

hear·say Pronunciation[heer-sey] noun 1. unverified, unofficial information gained or acquired from another and not part of one's direct knowledge: I pay no attention to hearsay.
2. an item of idle or unverified information or gossip; rumor: a malicious hearsay.

Since you want to throw the dictionary definition at me I don't know that it's dubious, as it seems to follow the definition. Maybe a little looser than your idea of hearsay, but certainly not dubious.

Listen, I suppose mustache cop is entitled to his opinion, but one would think that it doesn't suit the public safety standards to have a policeman who can't tell the difference between a terrorist and a congressman, and neither does it speak well that someone who will almost certainly have to deal with Muslims that he doesn't even know what they're called.

I am certain he meant to say "terrorist sympathizer", which is accurate.

But the libtards will be reminded that he didn't actually "call" him ANYTHING, according to what I read.

He simply stated "we are at war with the Islamic", which is certainly true.

Support our men in blue AND in desert camo!

And since when is 'terrorist" a "slur" as the Strib headline shouts?

Have the PC police added another " naughty word " to their list?

How about radical fascist Muslim jihadist?

Does that cover it?

»» Submitted by bud jr at 1:14 PM on March 2

Sparber, put down your sazerac, your post is out of context.

Go back and read the Strib piece again.
»» Submitted by bud jr at 1:20 PM on March 2

God damn, you're diverced from reality, bus, evidenced by your ongoing abuse of quotation marks.

Terrorist isn't simply a slur if it's untrue -- said aloud in a public forum, it's slander.

He simply stated "we are at war with the Islamic", which is certainly true.

I don't even know where to start with that. We're at war with Iraq, which was a secular nation before we invaded it, and almost certainly will be a fundamentalist Muslim country. So not only are we not at war with "the Islamic," we're actually actively helping them, as we did when we armed the Jihadists in the eighties and nineties, and as we did when we trained and supported Saddam Hussein.

But, you know, there's no point about worrying about facts when you're a racist.

Raindog, time for your meds.

Slander, is it? Is terrorist sympathizer slander then, too?

Then that means terrorism is bad then, right?

Huh.

Ooo, ooo, Mr. Kotter, Mr. Kotter...suck me into this!!!!

OK, so if we're at war with "the Islamics" (which why hasn't ANYONE said isn't a noun in this sense...where's Nathan, the English teacher), doesn't that mean that "the Islamics" are at war with "the Christianitites"? And if that's the case, how do all of you feel who are American Jews or Hindus or Agnostics or Aethists or real America-loving Muslims that you're all being lumped into this???

Bud, do you really believe that all Muslims are terrorists? If so, please. Just say so and let's be on with it.

This is insane. Anyone who says such a thing, regardless of their political views, are in a word "stupid." And, Bud, I've been through this before, I'm not a "liberal"...but I'm not "stupid" either.

Considering his grasp on world politics, Kroll probably lives in Bachmann's district.

Bottom line, Ellison is the elected representative of the people of the fifth district. If some thug cop or some asshat on a message board doesn't like that I really don't think anyone cares. But if that cop starts spouting off about it, has past run ins with city coucil members who are black, and a history of police brutality, he gets everything coming to him.

»» Submitted by eye roller at 3:46 PM on March 2

I'd say the wussification of america is embodied by aging white males desperately clinging to a 1950's vision of their power but coming up empty, impotent and incompetent in every way. What happened to accountability? I thought that was the mantra of republicans, and after 6 years in total power, 5 years mired in Iraq, more lives lost than in 9/11, what do you have to show for it? And don't say "No turrest attack in Amurica", because all of the lives lost in Iraq surely count as much.

"I think you have a dubious notion of what hearsay is. This was a first hand account of these two officers having heard him actually say it. Just because they declined to give their names does not make it hearsay."

- - -

Okay, I'm stuck in my office in a deserted and dead-silent building, and feeling bored and anal-retentive, so . . .

If you're reading a factual account in a newspaper, it's all hearsay to you, unless the reporter is telling you exactly what she saw herself.

If I tell you directly "I saw X happen," that's not hearsay to you. If I tell you directly "Bill says he saw X happen," that's hearsay to you. If a reporter tells you "Bill says he saw X happen," that's hearsay to us readers, but wasn't hearsay from Bill to the reporter.

If the unnamed officers actually made those statements directly to the reporter, then it wasn't hearsay to her, no matter whether she gives their names or not. If someone else told the reporter that the unnamed officers said those things, that would be hearsay to the reporter. Giving or not giving their names has no impact on whether this was hearsay.

Now, having said all of that, remember that (the subset of {most Mpls cops}) and Ellison have always hated each other, with passion and zeal.

By the way, did anyone see Anderson Cooper's show last night on CNN?

BudJr: Probably one newspaper's your limit. But rest up your lips and see if you can get through this lengthy piece in the PiPress today about an ex-cop who actually is working to enable the violence of home-grown and worldwide terrorists. Maybe it'll better focus your otherwise ham-handed, indiscriminant dudgeon toward Rep. Ellison and other blameless American Muslims:

A TALE OF 501 GUNS
An ex-cop turns to gun trafficking, spreading his deadly wares to criminals and terrorism suspects nationwide, including Minnesota. Hundreds of his weapons remain in unknown hands.
