Jucy Lucy

I know a Juicy Loosey is one of those girls that wears the tight sweatpants with "JUICY" across the ass.

Wayne, if you had brought out the humor side before the transit-nazi side, I'd like you more.

I kid, I kid.

Thanks to DeBlog for destats.

Yeah, everyone I know says I should try to be the laid back funny wayne more and the angry bitter asshole less. I'm inclined to agree, but it doesn't come naturally.

Regarding the rapidly declining enrollment in MPS: This could be the district's chance to streamline itself into a functioning institution. They could use the old schools as retirement homes for all the old people Minneapolis will have in 10-20 years.

Seriously... the developed world is going to be fucking old.
»» Submitted by »»» acalhoun at 1:19 PM on February 22

and the youth left over is going to be paying for the old people who refuse to die thanks to modern medicine (which keeps getting more expensive). I think that alone is reason to let a ton of illegal immigrants become legal so they pay into medicare and can help us support the old folks.

Jonathan, I thought the same thing. And was kind of pissed the reporter didn't clarify that. Journalism at its worst.

Professor: Minnesota has a continental divide, unlike you losers from Wisconsin.

Anyone else been to the Continental Divide? It's actually in Browns Valley. We used to drive out there to go to Ikes chicken shack for the all you could get buffet. Wednesdays were bullhead night if I remember correctly.

They could use the old schools as retirement homes for all the old people Minneapolis will have in 10-20 years.

They've got plenty of old people now. My father-in-law is nearly 80 and should probably move from his house to some sort of senior apartment, but there's not much like that in his neighborhood and he doesn't want to go far. There's a couple of shuddered schools though near there though. Maybe all the developers and construction workers who are no longer building condos could start rehabbing schools for the elderly. Get on that quick, before grampa breaks a hip.

»» Submitted by Eddie at 1:40 PM on February 22

Of course, the school board has to get the courage to close schools before they can sell them.

I can't believe that some domestic partner benefits still based on the necessity that the applicants be the same sex.

Thanks again, Jason, for the expert data. That Hazel, the old fox, can sure crunch those numbers.

Bob from ALAMN, back from the signing ceremony for the renewable energy law. It was held at the Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Envronment offices at the U of M St. Paul campus.

Nice crowd, all the local MSM outlets were there. Much talk about the efforts "bipartisan support," including some special love for the Gov. and other GOPers who supported this.

Senator Anderson (chief Senate author) pointed out that she has been working on this since she first introduced a similar bill in 2001. She spoke of a "wind of change" going through the MN House on Monday evening when the measure was approved by a sweeping margin. At least one television outlet (KARE-11) will be doing a broader story that includes biofuels for vehicles.

Unfortunately I can't link, but my first article for Max's pub, Pulse of the Twin Cities, is on page 10 of their current issue. Max also writes about Iran in that issue.

I enjoyed your blog Jason but this stat left me scratching my head:

" There's about to be a huge slowdown in the number of Twin Citians aged 20-34. From 2010-2020, the state projects growth of just 23,000 people in that age group. That means probably a decline in the birth rate, and bad news for schools.

I mean how can they project that kind of a decline? It doesn't take into account people who sell their homes and retire while younger people move in, as has been the case the past several years. (Excluding the boomers moving into the downtown condos, of course.)

To me it looks like they are guessing. In my opinion while Minneapolis will probable see fewer school kids, the demographic will will almost surely get younger.

Perhaps I am blinded by my own anecdotal experience. Or perhaps I am Blinded by Science!

The continental divide actually runs across all of northern Minnesota (scroll down for map). You can even go on a covered wagon tour of the continental divide north of Bemidji.
»» Submitted by »»» miller at 2:03 PM on February 22

But do they have a chicken shack?

There is actually a menage-trois divide just north of Hibbing. Ooh-la-la!

The French Geologist got to name all the cool glacial stuff, hence, moulons, morains, eskers etc.

That gust of wind was actually me. It's the last time I go to Chipolte for lunch on a long floor day.

Regarding population trends, Minnesota's high school graduate numbers are starting to flatten and our population will begin to age rapidly. In my opinion, this is the number one issue our state faces. As people leave their prime earning years they naturally pay less taxes and likely require more services from government. We could be in for an economic disaster.

Minnesotans, you'd make fun of people who say "worsh" instead of "wash" or "axe" instead of "ask", so repeat after me, and I'll try to get you closer:

Chipotle
I had a big bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, I went to Chipotle for lunch.

Pillow
Take this pill and call me in the morning, if you don't suffocate on your pillow. Note that the same sound goes into "milk", which is not pronounced with an other vowel sounds.
»» Submitted by »»» champs at 2:58 PM on February 22

Milk? Pill? What the hell are you talking about?

Isn't this entire thread about attempting to homogenize American culture further?

I'm fine the way things are here.
Of course I grew up here.

I do miss Cafe Solo. I heard something was opening up in there.

Curse you!

please learn how to pronounce bagels and bags too, minnesota.
»» Submitted by »»» wayne at 3:53 PM on February 22

Please learn to accept our cultural differences, wayne.

I heard they there are plenty of jobs in Alabama paying $100k for just out of school math guys! And they give you a hot girlfriend. Look into it.

Please pass the Worcestershire sauce!

(IPA [ÈwŠstY(y)ƒ(j)Y(r)] (or sort of like "wuster-shur" or "wuster-sheer"))
»» Submitted by »»» Realtor! at 4:10 PM on February 22

That's totally a lie! They don't even *have* 100k in alabama!

Anyway, I actually find the 'baygh' pronunciation endearing. It just makes me want to hug someone.
»» Submitted by »»» wayne at 4:13 PM on February 22

Hey, I went to school in Worcester (wiss-tah), Massachusetts!

Also fun with Gloucester (Glaw-stuh) and Leicester (Lie-ster)!
»» Submitted by »»» wayne at 4:14 PM on February 22

er, Leh-stuh? List-uh? it was a hard one to figure out what people were saying, honestly.
»» Submitted by »»» wayne at 4:15 PM on February 22

And then there was Marlborough (mar-bur-oh) and Berlin (bear-linn) and Leominster (leh-min-stuh) and Groton (graw-tun) and Chelmsford (kems-fuhd) and

shit, I could do this all day.
»» Submitted by »»» wayne at 4:17 PM on February 22

"I heard they there are plenty of jobs in Alabama paying $100k for just out of school math guys!"

- - -

No, they said " . . .$100k for just-out-of-school meth guys . . . "

Big difference. Meth has a market.

.
»» Submitted by »»» bobby_b at 5:04 PM on February 22

Yeah, nobody needs math. I did a quick survey at work and found out that only 8% of the five people my office do any math at all.
»» Submitted by »»» champs at 5:59 PM on February 22

Kevin started it again when he wrote "Chipotle" the way so many people say it.

And I can't stand the fact that Minnesotans buy "baggels" and carry them out of the store in "bayghs".
»» Submitted by »»» champs at 6:05 PM on February 22

"Kevin started it again when he wrote "Chipotle" the way so many people say it."

- - -

He spelled it "soggy rice taco"?

.
»» Submitted by »»» bobby_b at 6:11 PM on February 22

Maybe it's because I'm not from here. Maybe things will change on my silver anniversary of living in MN.

But still, it's only because of my age that I'd lose a "not from here" contest with Norm Coleman and Al Franken.
»» Submitted by »»» champs at 4:20 PM on February 22

Hey. Now we can make fun of the way Minnesotans talk as much as we want to. But we will not go ragging on Chipolte.

In fact, I'm going to eat soggy rice taco tonight just to piss you off. Don't worry, I'll have her home in time to tuck you in.

Sometimes the "correct" pronunciation bugs me. But some do have legit alternatives.

Like tournament.

"The NCAA Final Four Torn-nah-muhnt" makes me crazy!

I much prefer "Turn-A-Ment."

And paper route. (Rout please, not Root)

And put your socks in the"Droor"-like door (not "Drawer")

My favorite mispronunciation is Hootie Johnson calling it, "the Mast-uhs tuouh-na-ment." I could listen to that all day lawng.
»» Submitted by »»» kwatt at 10:46 PM on February 22

I think I must be confused, and it has nothing to do with the delicious Thomas Hardy's Ale I just drank with dinner...

As far as I can remember, most everyone I know pronounces these words the way Merriam-Webster would have us say them:
bag
bagel

Little help???
